Hilda Effiong Baci popularly known as Hilda Baci took up a cooking marathon for 100 hours from Thursday 11 to Monday 15 May, 2023 to break the World’s Guinness record as the longest cooking marathon. If She is successful, she will beat the previous record held by Lata Tondon(Indian) cooked for 87 hours 45 minutes in 2019. Finally, Hilda Baci receives an award for the world’s longest cooking marathon from the Guinness world record. She broke the previous record by cooking for 93 hours and 11 minutes.
Hilda Baci who is a 26 years old Nigerian chef started her cooking marathon to set a record for 100 hours. During that period, she cooked over 100 pots of food during her four days kitchen quest. It is unfortunate that almost seven (7) hours were deducted from her total cooking time thereby reducing it to 93 hours 11 minutes. This reduction was because she mistakenly took extra minutes for one of her rest breaks at the early stage of her attempt.
As Hilda Baci receives an award for the world’s longest cooking marathon just as has been expected to be announced by Guinness world record. She took up the challenge to attempt cooking for 110 hours. But as is always the case with all the participants, they are always permitted a five (5) minutes rest break for every continuous hour of activity. The breaks can be accumulated by the individual if not taken. The rest is also to enable them to sleep and use the bathroom during the period of the attempt.
Hilda took up the attempt to “put Nigerian cuisine on the map” and “to inspire young African women to chase their dreams” She also added by saying that “I also decided to break this record to truly push my limits and test my abilities” Hilda Baci prepared very well for her cook a marathon by creating a 35 -item menu ” as a guide” for every meal that she would cook.
One of her plans was to ensure that the necessary ingredients she needed to make each recipe was available and her team was always there to procure more food items while the cook-a-thon was going on based on the quantity needed to beef up her stock. This attempt took the world of social media by storm as millions of people in Nigeria and beyond were following her progress via Instagram line stream.
This cook-a-thon attempt by Hilda was so popular that the Guinness World Record website crashed for two(2) days due to the high traffic volume they received from her many loyal fans. Some high-profile Nigerians that visited Hilda to show their support during her cook-a-thon marathon include Yemi Osibanjo the Vice President of Nigeria, Babajide Sanwo-Olu the Governor of Lagos State, and Tiwa Savage the award-winning singer.
The Guinness World Record has rules for such an attempt Hilda Baci embarked and she is expected to abide by several rules during the period of her record-breaking cook-a-thon. Some of the rules are as follows:
- There must be at least two items being prepared or cooked at any time.
- A sous-chef is permitted to assist in prep work, washing up, and cleaning the kitchen area, but all the cooking must be done by the individual attempting the record.
One of the most important rules that the Guinness World Record has set for their food-related record attempts is that all the food items produced during the period must be consumed after cooking. This was one of the reasons why Hilda invited many people from the public to come and eat her freshly made meals. Any leftover food from her cook was taken to the Festus Fajemilo Foundation as a donation. And finally, Hilda Baci receives an award for the world’s longest cooking marathon after meeting the above rules set by Guinness World Record.
Hilda says that ” my team and my goal for the event was to make it free to all and to feed the less privileged” She says that each pot of food she cooked was big enough to serve between 30 -35 people and ” appropriate stock control was conducted” so as to avoid wastage of food.
